Baby's Favorite Things

Gratuitous baby G photo in his Rock N Play

This is a post about my favorite things for a new baby. As you remember I already did my favorite things for breastfeeding. This list is for newborn-3 months.

I read RAVE reviews about this puppy (bunny in our case) on every mommy blog I read before having G. To give you a little background, our bedroom is actually on the lower level of our house and G's room is upstairs. I was sure that I would want G down in our room with us for those late night feedings. I thought this would be perfect for our room because it is much smaller than a pack n play that would take up the whole floor of our room. You can also see that it is level with the bed which makes it easy to rock your LO to sleep without having to get out of bed. That's a nice feature.

Well it turns out I was partially right. What I didn't know was that newborns make a TON of noise while they sleep. Seriously, they make gurgling sounds, whimpers and snorts and hiccup-type noises, you can see the problem with this. Perhaps some moms get used to it but I certainly couldn't so G went to his room on night 3. It would've been earlier but my parents were staying with us and I didn't want to go up and down the stairs and wake up them and our dogs. I brought it down to our room a few other times too when we had guests. It is nice to reach over to rock them a little and it was really nice at the beginning because G broke my tailbone on his way out and that has been a real pain in the butt, seriously, lots of pain in my butt. That's for another post.

This wasn't a bad product though. G still slept in his rock n play (RNP) every night until about 2 and a half months. It was just in his room. I liked having him in the RNP over his crib which looked huge and flat and scary for his little newborn body. The RNP kind of snuggles them in and makes them happy. I noticed that when G moved to his crib that he didn't sleep as well and would get startled easily. I think that could be a downside of the RNP too just because they're used to that feeling of being safe, but I would use it again for baby 2 because it is nice. They advertise that it can also be used for play time but I never did. In my opinion baby needs to know that cribs/RNP (or wherever they sleep) is for sleeping and they better get down to business. No monkey stuff in there, just sleep. It has worked for us so far. I realize that may not work for everyone. We are also lucky enough to have room in our house for a swing/bouncer, etc. Some people aren't as fortunate.

We are also still using it for when we travel instead of lugging around the pack n play (which is huge) this folds in half for easy storage and travel!  Plus it is easy to wash, just throw it in the machine and walk away.

Bottom line, definitely worth your $50!

Grady started using this toy around 2.5-3 months. He loved it. Those new baby legs want to move and you will never grow tired of watching them get excited when they discover they have a purpose! The toy bar can go down on the floor for tummy time or be put up like in the picture. (other dangly toys not shown)

Now at 10.5 months we have moved the piano so that it sits parallel to the floor and he sits and plays it all the time. Certainly a baby must have in my book. A lot of value out of one toy!

G really liked to look at this "book" in the car. It was great for sitting down and reading at home too!

These were wonderful for a swaddle novice like me. I don't know if G hated to be swaddled because I didn't do it right or just because he didn't like to be swaddled but he really liked these. However I must say that most babies do like to be swaddled so if you go for sleep sacks you will want to stick with the ones that have the velcro straighjacket looking things on them. G would fight and scream until his arms got out but I still liked them because they would bring the sleep sack in tighter to his body.

This next one is more for mom than baby if you are using the the sleep sacks but these are an absolute MUST have for every new mama. You should note you can get these in a minky, fleece or cotton. You will need to use your judgment on what time of year you're buying for. Winter you'll want warmer than summer obviously.

These are so handy to have. Around 6 months when G started having trouble sleeping we tried a blanket in the crib with him. He didn't ever like a paci and soon grew tired of sucking his hands. I liked these because they are VERY breathable. Make sure you don't cheap out and get the target packs, you want the expensive boutique sized swaddles (47x47). They're worth it. I used them to snuggle G when he was an infant, cover up while breast feeding when company was over, cover his car seat, clean up spit up when I didn't have a burp rag handy, you name it and I used it for it probably. If you want to spend a little bit more per blanket I suggest the bamboo version. They're SOOO soft. Just don't wash them with the sleep sacks or bibs, I promise you even though you just KNOW you closed up all that velcro, it will find your super soft bamboo blanket and they'll get caught up together and you will find snags on that blanket that make your heart (and pocketbook) cry. You should note that the solid bamboos are best. The design on the bamboo prints are a little crunchy so I don't think they would be baby's favorite.
You will note that their dream and cozy blankets are also wonderful, great for walks in the stroller and for covering up in the car or on the way inside when it is -20.

I am planning to do a "diapering" post soon but I wanted to add that G had some funky diapering issues right away when his little body was getting used to diapers so I would let him lay out naked for awhile each day. He bawled and peed and bawled and peed when we did this. No matter how high I cranked the thermostat. So I would also suggest you grab one of these babies right away too. I think even if you aren't having diapering issues it is nice to let their little bodies have some diaper free time each day to air out. These are handy to have when you're preggo too. You never know when you'll be like me and your water will break while you're in bed.

This was G's second toy love after the piano toy! This was a lifesaver in the car. G generally didn't mind the car seat but when he didn't want to go in all you had to do was push the nose on the tiger and all was right in G's world. Best $10 ever spent! (yes I do have a picture of him playing with this too but I will spare you, can you say first child?!)

Everyone knows these are great! Kids chew on books and rip those fragile pages right out unless they're cardboard and chunky. They also have big toddler sized lap books which are great if you can find some! I got a couple, one from target and one from Sam's club. The Sandra Boynton books are my favorite. I also love Nancy Tillman books. They're poetic and make my heart ache they're so sweet.

This one is my favorite
I love these water proof books. I almost never use them in the tub either! All babies put everything in their mouth. It is a fact of life. That's how they learn to explore their world. It's cute (when it is a toy) and horrifying (when it is a dog toy, or dog food, or the dog bowl) every day. They love to chew on those board books I mentioned above so these waterproof books are a genius way to let them chew and explore but also save the book! So we have one in the car, at the changing table, I have one anywhere I think I need him to be distracted for a minute while I wrestle him into something.

Honorable Mentions for must haves -
A baby swing. This was a must for G, he loved to swing. We borrowed a swing which was super nice! If I were to look to buy a swing I would get one that could swing side to side or back and forth (which this one did) and had the option to plug it into the wall or use batteries (which this one did not). It seems like most of them have both options now, and I was actually surprised how long the batteries lasted for how much we used it!

G preferred the swing but some babies love the bouncer chair too! I had the snug-a-bunny bouncer. G SCREAMED whenever I tried to put him in it though. I think it just depends on the kid.

I would say that is about all your baby really wants or needs right away. I will post more about diapering, strollers and car seats soon!

Welcome 2014

Happy New Year All!

To get this year started right I wanted to share a few of my New Year's Resolutions. I must also say that it was really hard to say goodbye to 2013 this year. It was a truly great year for us, I hope 2014 doesn't let us down!

1. Be a better citizen of this earth. I have been trying to eat more local produce and reduce my carbon footprint for awhile now (not through my car though, I drive a monstrosity, please forgive me Earth but I will keep my baby safe.

Action Plan:
  • Use less plastic - NO MORE plastic water bottles in 2014 and beyond! Use cloth bags at the store and in general try not to buy things that are in ridiculous amounts of plastic packaging.
  • Use my amazon prime less often and try not to renew it again next year. Yes I find great deals on amazon but at the expense of a huge carbon footprint to bring goods into my community that are already being shipped here
  • Recycle more - This shouldn't be hard except I need to buy another container so Ross doesn't put it in the trash when it gets full outside.
  • Plant a garden for fresh produce
  • Eat seasonal food - and try to only eat organic. Let's be honest all those chemicals that we use on crops are aimed to kill a living pest, so what do we really think it will do to our bodies?! I am a firm believer that all the GMOs and chemicals we are putting in our bodies are harming us. Let's be mindful of what we put on our earth and in our bodies.
2. Blog more. I have a terrible memory and I don't keep a journal so this really needs to become a priority for me again!

3. Get (back) to the gym and eat less sweets. This is a given for me every year. There is nothing like the feeling after a good workout!

4. Budget & Meal plan. I am now firmly in my 30s and have a family to cook for and that count on me. Time to get food on the table and not break the bank doing it!

5. This goes with 4 but it needs its own category so I pay attention to it - Eat out less! No more than one lunch out per week. No more than one dinner out/take out per week except for special ocassions and try to plan ahead to build those in.

6. Be a better house keeper. I am terrible at leaving things lying around the house. This must change or Ross will lose his sanity.

I feel like those are all great places to start!

Getting Back at it!

You know when something just gets away from you and you're a little gun shy about getting back to it. That's blogging for me right now. I am so far behind on G's posts and posts about life that I feel terrible and avoid my blog like nobody's business.

Let's catch up!

G is officially 8 months old people! I will take his "official" 8 month photos this weekend and write the update then :)

Sunshines & Creeps

  • Sunshine for Friday. Even though I have had a very short week I definitely need the weekend.
  • Creep to Grady getting his first cold this week. He got a fever on Wednesday and I stayed home with him on Thursday. He is back at daycare now but is definitely still not feeling the greatest.
  • Creep to mom catching G's illness.
  • SUNSHINE to baby Sloane making her grand entrance into the world. I can't wait to meet her!

Hump day self pity

I am so having "one of those days". Last night I accidentally washed a new dark pink work out top with my white delicates. Which wouldn't be a huge deal except one of my favorite sweatshirts and long sleeve workout tops were in there.  Ugh. I have soaked the clothes and washed them four times now. Still se pink. It may be time to think about redying my white workout top pink or blue or something :( this caused me to stay up so late (like hours past my bedtime). Then I was just falling asleep and a storm hit and I had to race around our house to close the windows.

Now this morning I was on my way to work and G's daycare bag fell over in the car and his bottles spilled and I lost about 2.5 oz of G's milk for the day. This is incredibly traumatizing as any breast feeding mother knows. So I guess I'll be spending a little extra time with my milk machine today.

The saving grace of the day is that I'm headed to a friends house for dinner tonight. I'm excited! I haven't seen her in too long. Here's hoping I don't fall asleep on her!

Sunshines and Creeps

  • Sunshine to milder weather which permits me to take baby G outside more often.
  • Creep to forgetting my pumping bottles again on Wednesday. That seriously put a damper on my day and I had to wait for Ross to bring them to me, boobs. were. exploding.
  • Creep to turning into a crotchety old lady. A child was sitting in his parents' car (and by sitting in the car I mean he was hanging out the window of his parents' car) and throwing things at passing cars. It, of course, hit my windshield. I am not sure what it was but it made quite the noise. I must note that I was fairly impressed he had such good aim, but I called the cops on them anyway. That kid needs a little talking to, clearly his parents weren't going to do it, and he is going to cause an accident or do something to someone's car.
  • Sunshine to daycare having a lemonade stand today. I bet it will be adorable! They're raising money for school supplies for needy children. How fun is that?!
  • Sunshine to this week being over. I'm in desperate need of a reset. G is constantly having blow outs and I really can't take washing another poopy item today (here's hoping he gives me a little break). I'm trying a new type of diaper today so we'll see how it goes.
  • Sunshine to trader joes. I so wish we had one nearby. I am currently loving their kalamata olive hummus. YUM!
  • Sunshine to a weekend with my boy! I can't wait!!

G at 5 Months

I can't believe it is time to write this post (1 week late). Plus a bit of a photo dump.

Cool guy on the 4th of July
First 4th of July outfit

Day care celebration for the 4th.

Sleeping sideways
My little man is already 5 months. I have no idea where the past month went! It seemed to fly by!

Sleep: About the same as last month. You're almost sleeping through the night most of the time but every now and again you think you need a snack around 3:30.

Daily Routine: We're up for the day around 6:30-7. I usually feed you first then you lay on the bed while I get ready (don't worry moms I have a very close eye on him) most of the time you're sleeping again.

We're still trying to leave leave for daycare  at 7:40 but more like 7:50 in reality. We sing all the way to daycare. You love going there so it is a fun way to start your day.
I love to read

You're starting to be a better napper for her and she says you're a happier baby if you get a morning and an afternoon nap in. She has a hard time getting you to nap some days though. You're too busy playing and exploring. One day she said you were falling asleep playing with your toys and yet you still wouldn't nap for her.

First time at the pool
I'm still coming to visit you at daycare each day at lunch. So far we only had one day where I couldn't make it.

You're still napping on our way home from daycare. It is like a switch. You're happy and playing but the second you see me you get cranky and want to get in your car seat for a nap. It is pretty nice of you to do. It allows me to drive home and get the bottles washed and supper started before you wake up to eat.

First trip to the Zoo
Then you wake up to eat, you watch us eat. You're starting to get very interested in what we are doing, watching the fork go up and down again (same with cups). But I'm holding off on solids until next month, if you'll let me.

First time in the jumper
Eating: Still about the same. Once before we head out for the day plus you're eating a 4 oz bottle in the morning and afternoon. I also send you with a "snack" bottle of 2 oz. for whenever you need it. Plus you're eating at lunch and two dinners and a midnight snack. But I have no idea how much you're eating in total volume.

4 month well baby check up
Weight: Not sure. I would guess you're at about 19-20 pounds. We better start getting through those 6-9 month clothes because you'll cruise through them I'm sure! The 12 month ones aren't all that big.

Length: You seem to be filling out more of the car seat these days. I hope we will get a couple more months use out of it but who knows!

Diaper Size: Size 3 for you big boy! Many of my friends have children who are starting to potty train and they're in size 5 diapers, it makes me wonder if you'll slow down or if I'll be buying giant diapers for you later on. Other option is that you better potty train really early :)

Dad reading to G on father's day
Clothing size: 6-9 Months, as referenced above, they're really not that big. 9-12 months for Children's Place. Why do they feel the need to have their own sizing. I will never get it. We will be moving up again shortly I'm sure. You've really got to slow down, your wardrobe is plentiful but you're not giving me much time to use it!

Hair: Fairly light where new hair is coming in. I think you'll have our hair color. Both mom and dad have similar shades.

Eyes: Beautiful Baby Browns.

Righty or Lefty? You've always favored doing things with your left hand but do them better with your right hand. In the last month you've started to do more with your right hand now. Hopefully this means you're a righty like mom and dad. The world is an easier place for us righties.
Sleeping with Grandpa W

You're a determined baby. When you get your mind set on something you want to do it! Your new thing is to grab the handle on the sink and try to move it while the water is on. I hold you in the sink while I fill your little bath tub with water. You used to try to grab the water but have moved on to the handle. You will just sit and stomp your feet when you can't get it to move. Mom laughs. Sorry bud.

Hanging out with Grandpa W on Father's Day
You have mastered rolling about freely now. You refuse to sleep on your back now. The second your back hits the mattress you roll to your side. You'll bring your lets straight up in the air and plop them to one side or the other. You also continue to love bath time. You kick kick kick your legs in the bath and grab for toys. We are just about ready to get you in the big boy tub because you're just too restricted in the baby tub!
